Automated smartphone-based cough audio classification for rapid tuberculosis triage testing (Cough Audio triaGE for TB). It will not replace normal TB testing, but will be a way to filter patients most likely to have TB so that they can access specialised TB testing and care.

CAGE-TB brings together African and European scientists to develop a mobile phone-based cough triage test for Tuberculosis (TB). Our vision is to close the gap between patients screened for TB and patients tested for TB and reduce the number of unnecessary routine TB tests.

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health, ISGlobal, is the fruit of an innovative alliance between the “la Caixa” Foundation, academic institutions and government bodies to contribute to the efforts undertaken by the international community to address the challenges in global health.

ISGlobal is a consolidated hub of excellence in research that has grown out of work first started in the world of health care by the Hospital Clínic and the Parc de Salut MAR and in the academic sphere by the University of Barcelona and Pompeu Fabra University. Its working model is based on the generation of scientific knowledge through Research Programmes and Groups, and its translation through the areas of Education and Training and Analysis and Global Development.

Its ultimate goal is to help close the gaps in health disparities between and within different regions of the world.

The Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development is a joint institute of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije University (VU).

AIGHD performs three core functions:

  • a platform for researchers to catalyze scientific excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and policy development within and across various faculties of the two Amsterdam universities
  • a hub for education – at bachelors, masters and PhD level – across various faculties of the two Amsterdam universities
  • a support facility aimed at integrated management of research and education projects within low- and middle-income countries focused on global health and development

How do we achieve our mission?
AIGHD achieves its mission and vision by accelerating theory into practice. It is not only important to generate research in global health and development, but also to accelerate this research into policy at the local, national, and international levels.

Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Africa. In January of that year, the school, which was later renamed Uganda Technical College, opened its doors to 14 day students who began studying Carpentry, Building and Mechanics.

The College soon began offering various other courses in Medical Care, Agriculture , Veterinary Sciences and Teacher Training. It expanded over the years to become a Center for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935. In 1937, the College started developing into an institution of higher education, offering post-school certificate courses.

Strategic Plan (2020-2030).

At its 148th meeting held on 15th June 2020, Makerere University Council approved the Strategic Plan (2020-2030) for Makerere University.The Stategic Plan seeks to transform Makerere University into a more research-intensive University and enhance relevance to the community and consolidate Makerere’s position as Uganda’s engine of development.

Objective

PreFIT aims to validate ready-to-use candidate assays for incipient TB in populations of intended use across different High burden settings in Mozambique, South Africa and Uganda

These include a GeneXpert cartridge-based 3-gene signature, C-reactive protein, hemoglobin and markers of iron homeostasis. PreFIT will establish a diagnostic trial cohort of 4040 highly exposed HIV-negative and positive TB-free contacts followed prospectively for development of culture-confirmed TB disease for 12 months with candidate testing at months 0 and 6 (Figure 1). The assays will be validated for clinical performance to predict TB disease, feasibility and cost when used at point-of-care.
