Genomics, Molecular and Immunology Laboratories

P.O. Box 7076, Upper Hill Mulago, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University

The Genomics, Molecular and Immunology Laboratories (GMI Labs) are diagnostic, research, and training facilities, focused on both infectious and non-infectious diseases or conditions. The GMI Laboratories provide laboratory services to all healthcare providers, including physicians, researchers, epidemiologists, students, and all health care policymakers, for the benefit of patients and the global community.

The GMI Laboratories are located at the Department of Immunology and Molecular Biology, School of Biomedical Sciences, under Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS). Structure wise, they constitute two Units; The Genomics and Molecular Unit and the Immunology Unit.  The Genomics and Molecular Unit is located on the third floor (Level 3), Pathology-Microbiology Building, while the Immunology Unit is on first floor or level 1 School of Medicine building at Makerere University College of Health Sciences.

Access to the Genomics and Molecular Unit is through the Main Entrance located immediately near the elevator, with restricted access to the non-long-term staff and clients. As well, the clients and other stakeholders can access the Genomics and Molecular Biology Unit by use of stairs running from the ground floor of Pathology-Microbiology Building to the Third floor of the same building via the side where Makerere University Walter Reed Project Laboratories are located.

Located on the top floor of the Pathology/Microbiology building, CHS. It constitutes an RNA preparation and manipulation unit of 250 sq. ft. and a DNA extraction and manipulation unit of 280 sq. ft. Adjacent to these is a 250 sq. ft. sequencing facility containing an Illumina MiSeq whole genome sequencer (illumine Inc. USA) instrument. Other equipment available in this facility includes a DNA extraction machine (QIAcube) and a QIAxcel robotic PCR setup (liquid handling). Adjacent to these facilities is a sequence analysis unit endowed with computational platforms that include six 21-inch Mac workstations supported by servers with up to 40 TB storage and 500 GB RAM, with several bioinformatics software installed with an e-BioKit for student training. This facility is currently supported by the CAfGEN consortium of the NIH’s H3Africa initiative.
