February 15, 2023 scholarship

We are extending the deadline for the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Immunology and Tissue Biology (AHRI Durban Campus) – we would be grateful if you could disseminate this information widely within your networks – (details below):

Description:

This three-year postdoctoral position in Professor Zaza Ndhlovu’s research group at AHRI in Durban, South Africa, is embedded in a recently awarded Bill and Melinda Gates-funded grant.

The major barrier to HIV prevention and cure efforts is the extremely rapid establishment of reservoirs throughout the body. The precise nature, phenotype, and size of the persistent HIV reservoirs in tissues is poorly understood. The project will involve studying human tissue samples that are highly enriched in lymphoid structures such as lymph nodes, gut and various post-mortem samples. The tissues will be analyzed using the best-in class spatial imaging technology to defining where HIV hides within the human body during therapy and examine how persistent infection alters tissue resident immunity. Knowledge gained from this study will be used to design a cure for HIV which entails total eradication of HIV from the body.

This project is part of the BMGF funded international HIV reservoirs consortium that brings together experts in high dimensional imaging, human immunology, virology, and HIV vaccinology. The project will therefore involve regular interactions with this extensive international research network and is an excellent opportunity for a rapid career development.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. qualification in Immunology, histology and imaging, molecular biology etc.
  • High dimensional flowcytometry
  • Experience in human genome sequence analysis and RNA-Seq data will be desirable.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease research is preferable but not essential (particularly HIV)
  • Ability to prepare results for publication and draft own manuscripts
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and team orientated

How to apply

Please send a cover letter and C.V with the subject listed as ‘Postdoc in Immunology and tissue biology, ZN’ to education@ahri.orgThe closing date for applications is 28 February 2023.
