Prof. Erisa Mwaka

Clinician, Academician, and Bioethicist

He is an Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon, Associate Professor, and the current Chair of the Department of Human Anatomy at Makerere University.

He has served as a research ethics committee chair and is an active member of the Forum for Research Ethics Committee Chairs in Uganda. He is also part of the bioethics working group at the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology, where he contributes to short course training in Human Subject Protection, Responsible Conduct of Research, Good Clinical Practice, and Clinical Ethics.

As a faculty member of the US Fogarty International Centre (FIC)–funded International Health Research Ethics Training (IHRET) program at Makerere University, he has played a key role in building capacity in bioethics. He is a co-investigator and coordinator of the PhD in Bioethics program at Makerere University and has served as principal investigator and past Chair of the H3Africa Ethics and Community Engagement Working Group.

His research interests span research ethics, clinical ethics, digital health ethics, and the ethical, legal, and social implications of biobanking and genomic research. He also works extensively in human anatomy, medical education, and bone health. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, making notable contributions to both academic and clinical practice.
